Artemisinin and its derivatives, extracted from a herb, have important anti-malarial properties. To date, resistance to artemisinin and its derivatives has not been reported, unlike other anti-malarial drugs. Artemisinin-based drugs including artesunate have been found to be effective against resistant strains of malaria when prescribed alone, but disease relapse commonly occurs. When artemisinin is combined with another effective anti-malarial drug Amodiaquine, a shorter course of treatment is rapidly effective and recurrence of the disease is uncommon.
