    Carrageenan is a food additive used as thickening and stabilizing agents for a wide range of products.

    Carrageenan is a family of linear sulphate polysaccarides extracted from red seaweeds. These chemicals are large, highly flexible molecules which curl around each other forming double-helical structures. This gives them the ability to form a variety of different gels at room temperature. They are widely used in the food and other industries as thickening and stabilizing agents. A particular advantage is that they are thixotropic -- they thin under shear stress and recover their viscosity once the stress is removed. This means that they are easy to pump but stiffen again afterwards.

    Can be used as:

    1. As stabilizer and/ or emulsifier for many food products, such as chocolate
    2. As additive in instant food drinks, to keep food particles liquid in mixture
    3. As emulsifier, to give certain foods a smooth consistency, while serving as a binder to keep mixture of food intact
    4. As medicinal ingredients in the preparation of surgical jellies
    5. As sizing for textiles and toothpastes
