DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:
Closely knotted in excellent wool and with rich glowing vegetable colour, this is a most elegant specimen of the compartmental field design unique to the weavers of the Bakhtiari tribe. The ivory compartments of the field contain the tree motifs beloved of the Bakhtiari, while the other compartments with red, yellow ochre, coral rose, indigo and cobalt blue grounds hold either octofoil flowerheads or tree like shrubs, one of the latter with a small bird-form at its base. The ground colours of the panels are most imaginatively arranged to produce a very pleasing effect. The ivory ground main border has a series of stylised rosettes in walnut brown alternating with contrasted rosettes in peach and terracotta all distributed upon a striking foliate meander in rose and dark blue. Two roseate side borders with pink stem-lattice patterns complete this outstanding example of classic Bakhtiari knotting art.
