Amies medium is a further modification of Stuart medium.
The glycerophosphate is replaced by an inorganic phosphate and methylene blue by pharmacological charcoal.
Calcium and magnessium are also added , thus maintaining the permeability of the bacterial cell.
This medium supports the viability of organisms such as Trichonomas sp., Neisseira sp., Haemophilus sp, Corynebacteria, streptococci, Enterobacteriaceae, etc. for up to 3 days, although the recovery of microorganisms is better if cultured in the first 24 hours.
Amies transport swabs are available with or without charcoal.
Swabs are sterilized by irradation.

Expiry date: 30 months after sterilisation date.
