What is Odds-on? Odds-on is a Chinese medicine that mainly treats the respiratory system. Respiratory disorders, though comparatively serious, will not endanger life. With proper treatment and rehabilitation, the patient can still live a normal life. However, it is a big problem if anyone is short of breath. The diseased respiratory system will do harm to breathing, which will eventually affect life quality of the patient. That£ªs why the product is called Odds-on.

As we all know, the respiratory system is one of the most important systems in the human body that are directly related to energy supply and metabolism. Once the respiratory system is diseased, light cases as mentioned above will affect work and study of the patient, for example, unable to fall asleep as a result of frequent cough and flushes caused by asthma; serious cases will lead to death if the patient is exhausted as a result of excessive movements.

Occurrence, prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases

Respiratory diseases refer to diseases in the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and thoracic cavity such as acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, lung abscess and lung cancer. The most common respiratory diseases are chronic bronchitis, asthma and lung cancer. With high incidence, the diseases harm the human body significantly.

Respiratory diseases are mostly related to the constitution, the immune to diseases and the environment.

    Acute bronchitis

As an acute inflammation of mucous membrane of bronchi, acute bronchitis is mostly caused by viral or bacterial infection, physical or chemical stimulation or allergic reaction. Its pathogens include influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, pneumococcus, streptococcus, staphylococcus, etc. The disease tends to contract when the patient is cold, fatigue or with low immunity. The disease, which is of high incidence, is induced by coldness, dust, pollen, mold, spore, harmful substances such as formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, waste gases, toluene, ethylenediamine, herterologous protein, etc.

    Chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is closely associated with the human constitution. The physically weak and the elderly are more likely to suffer from it, as their respiratory tracts are weak. Those with allergic constitution or with vegetative nerve functional disturbance tend to suffer from the disease when they are stimulated by dust, pollen, air pollution, infection or coldness. Longtime smoking proves to be one of the most important causes.

    Asthma

The causes of asthma are found to be complex while those with allergic constitution are especially prone to the disease. In nature, asthma is a kind of allergic reaction. When exposed to pollens, dusts, bacteria and herterologous proteins, concentration of immunoglobulin E (IgE) will rise. IgE combines with mast cells, B cells, phagocytes, eosinophils and NK cell membranes of bronchi. When the body is exposed to pollens, dusts, bacteria or herterologous proteins for the second time, the IgE will be produced in great amounts. Excessive IgE leads to allergic reaction of human organs, which harms the mast cells, phagocytes and NK cells in the respiratory system. When damaged, mast cells release histamine, which causes spasm of smooth muscles in bronchi and thus leads to asthma. Damage to NK cells, phagocytes and eosinophils results in reduced immunity and reduced ability to remove allergens. For some patients, vegetative nerve functional disturbance and vagus superexcitation result in over-response of smooth muscles of trachea and bronchi. When cold air, smoke or chemical gases are breathed in, the vagus tends to be excessively excited, leading to asthma.

    Pneumonia

Most cases of pneumonia are caused by germs such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, rickettsia, chlamydia, mycoplasm and protozoa, while pneumococcus is the main cause. Physical or chemical factors may also cause pneumonia. Pneumonia occurs all year around, especially in winter and early spring. Most patients are the young and the middle-aged. Normal existence of pneumococcus in the respiratory tract leads to no disease, as ciliary actions of mucous epithelial cells remove pneumococcus invaders and alveolar immunocytes kill invading viruses and pathogens. However, when resistance to diseases is reduced as a result of coldness or harmful gases, pneumococcuses invade the lungs, leading to pneumonia.

    Lung cancer

Lung cancer has proved to be a common disease with rising incidence in recent years. China£ªs incidence of lung cancer with 5-year survival rate under 10% has risen up to about 0.05%. The disease is closely associated with smoking, longtime intake of waste gases, sulfur dioxide, toluene and formaldehyde. The chemical gases stimulate cell mutation of the respiratory system, turning normal cells into tumor cells. Lung cancer is also related to poor immunity as immunocytes can not effectively eliminate cancer cells.

Respiratory diseases are of high incidence at present. According to statistics of the early 1990s, the incidence of acute bronchitis in China is 1%; the incidence of chronic bronchitis 3.8%, while it is as high as 15% among those aged over 50; the incidence of asthma is 3% among children and 1% among the whole population. In recent years, respiratory diseases are spreading at a surprising rate both at home and abroad. According to a recent US report, the incidence of asthma has been doubled compared to that of twenty years ago-up to 7% of the total population. The rising incidence results from air pollution, for example, waste gases such as toluene, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, exhaustsand ethylenediamine. Experiments have proved that if sulfur dioxide or dust is as dense as 1000 mg/m3, the incidence of chronic bronchitis or asthma will rise significantly. Longtime contact with harmful gases will damage mucous epithelia of trachea and bronchi, thus weakening immunity and making viruses and bacteria easier to invade the respiratory system. Longtime invasion of viruses and bacteria will cause allergic reaction of the respiratory tract. Chemical gases stimulate cell mutation of the respiratory system, turning normal cells into tumor cells.

    Components of Odds-on

Fungus foods are of great important in prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases. The newly developed Odds-on contains a fungus A, which contains rich fungus polysaccharides and cordycepic acid. Ancient TCM books indicate that fungus A is an effective tranquilizer and spasm reliever. Fungus A has long been used to relieve various spasms in the traditional Chinese medicine. Modern researches have found that fungus polysaccharides stimulate reproduction of trachea epithelia and thus promote the ability to remove foreign substances. In addition, fungus polysaccharides promote immunocytes£ª ability to eliminate invading bacteria, viruses and tumor cells, reduce excessive fluid immunity, lower IgE level and thus inhibit allergic reactions. Experiments have revealed that fungus A effectively tranquilizes the mind, relieves pain and reduced body temperature. When injected with fungus A extracts, the sleeping time of mice is reduced by 69.2% compared to that of the control group. Injection of fungus A extracts reduces the body temperature of artificially heated mice by 2.5 to 0.7 within one to four hours. Injection of fungus A extracts reduced body twisting caused by injection of acetic acid by 97.2% within 20 minutes. The injection also raises the power of phagocytes by 100.3% compared with the control group.

Another main component in Odds-on is B, which functions as:

    I. Relieving cough

The active ingredient of B may cover inflammatory throat mucous membrane and reduce physical and chemical stimulation, thus relieving cough. Its derivatives relieve cough in guinea pigs as effectively as cocaine. The compounds most effectively reliever cough caused by chemical or electronic stimulation of cat throat nerves. Therefore, the compounds work on the nervous system. Component B is used to relieve bronchitis, pharyngolaryngitis, acoustic trauma and asthma.

    II. Preventing inflammation and tumor
