2. Sources and Habitat

5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid which is manufactured from the seeds of an African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia.

It is a woody climbing shrub native to West Africa and Central Africa. The seeds of the plant are used as an herbal supplement for their 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) content.

5. Safety Concerns

Potential side effects of 5-HTP include nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea. Rarely, allergic reaction to the supplement may occur.

The safety of 5-HTP in pregnant or nursing women and people with liver or kidney disease has not been established.

Children with Down's syndrome should not take 5-HTP.
