Straw ( Indonesian : jerami/ Bataknese : Gala Ni Eme)
Straw collation art is a work of art using material from nature, that is straw. Straw combined with special techniques provides fine work of paintings.
In order to explore potential creativity, I made this piece of art. I also collaborate my painting with â € ˜ Ulosâ € ™ , a traditional textile from North Sumatra. With one vision, to introduce Bataknese culture to the world.
In 1991, when I was still in the 9th grade of junior high school , I started learning this art. At that time this kind of art were rarely to found, moreover in Bataknese people. I did the painting at the harvest time which had happened to be holiday from school also.
I gathered bale of straw from field of grains called Lumban Rihit ( Sipoholon) and Banuaji ( Tarutung) . The good climate, fertile soil, and grains which had only one harvest time in a year, produced good quality straw with beautiful colors, gold yellow, light brown, and broken white.
In the past I only done the art because of hobby, and the materials I used were very simple, black painted board. In 1992 to 1995, I started to make painting on a black painted board, and framed the object also with straws. In 1996 I work in a company, while doing painting. Two years later, I tried to mixed frame with feather carpet as the background. In the year of 2000, I used posters and straws as the writings. A year later, I try to apply straws in other material, a rock.
In March-April 2003, I read an article about ulos that announce by the Regent of North Tapanuli, R.E. Nainggolan MM. The article that written in one of traditional batak magazine was about the developing marketing of ulos. It was really inspiring me to made ulos as a material for my straw collation art. I decided to combined â € ˜ Pradaâ € ™ frame ( 120x87cm) and ulos as the background. The title of the painting was â € ˜ Immanuelâ € ™ , and it did had a great respond.
In June 2003, I made my painting with winnowing with black color as the background. The result was a more unique and beautiful art. Then I made the straw collation art straight into a picture. The first picture I made were â € ˜ Cendrawasihâ € ™ and â € ˜ Singaâ € ™ ( Lion) a Singapore icon. Beside the domestic market, I had sent my paintings to countries such as Singapore, China, USA, and German.
