Design and implementation of hydrogen and renewable energy systems
Bryte Energy offers services ranging from feasibility studies to full design, installation and operational management of sustainable energy schemes.
With our experience of designing, installing and operating one of the world's first integrated hydrogen and renewable energy systems, known as the HARI (Hydrogen and Renewables Integration) project, the Bryte Energy team are uniquely qualified to offer consultancy in such matters. The HARI project is a demonstration and research facility, established in 2004, which is located at West Beacon Farm in Leicestershire, UK. The findings of the research carried out there are continuing to influence current thinking on the operation of integrated systems at both small and large scale.
Using our specially developed design methodologies, we can specify the components and configuration of complete sustainable energy systems, whether grid-connected or fully autonomous, based upon the energy demands of a given location and its prevailing meteorological conditions. Emphasis is placed upon maximising safety, energy efficiency, durability and reliability of equipment and return on investement. The model can be scaled to address local, regional or larger systems.
Bryte Energy has particular expertise in the production of hydrogen by electrolysis powered from intermittent and dynamic renewable energy resources. We have experience in the operation of fuel cells and their integration into energy networks. We also have access to unique electrical distribution and control methodologies for the management of complex renewable energy systems that have been developed by our partners. Most importantly, across all these activities, safety is paramount. Such installations typically involve electrical, fire and chemical hazards, but codes and standards are yet to be formulated for much of the risk associated with these new applications. Bryte Energy's experience, exemplary record and strict safety regime are therefore a reassurance to customers.
    Strategic studies
Bryte Energy undertakes scenario building and roadmapping activities for future energy systems using our in-house FESA (Future Energy Scenario Assessment) software model.
The FESA model can be used to build and test future energy scenario options. Using environmental, technical and financial parameters, FESA can derive the most economic energy mix to serve all sectors, while meeting a range of user-definable targets. This tool is typically applied to answering questions about the future viability of emerging low-carbon, and other energy technologies, and assessing their potential market size. Examples include studies on:
    - the role of energy storage in a low-carbon energy system
    - the role of hydrogen in the UK's future energy system
    - grid balancing mechanisms for networks containing a significant proportion of renewable generation
    - the integration of low-carbon transport into energy infrastructures
Of particular interest is the topical debate about the “hydrogen economy” that many anticipate will be necessary for the building of a sustainable future. With expertise in both hydrogen and renewable energy systems, Bryte Energy is well placed to understand the bigger picture when considering complete energy systems. This rare perspective allows us to bring fresh insight to the development of scenarios for a potential future hydrogen economy. Our expertise enables a clearer critical assessment of the many preconceptions and assumptions about such a concept, thus challenging some of the prevailing misconceptions about the true nature of a hydrogen economy. Specific studies have also been undertaken to assess the viability of non-fossil hydrogen production via electrolysis.
    Other activities
Through its close association with Loughborough University, Bryte Energy also provides supervisory support for student projects and contributes to other research activities.
Bryte Energy is a member of the Energy Institute, the UK Hydrogen Association and we hold a place on the London Hydrogen Partnership’s Infrastructure and Renewables task group. We also contribute to the International Energy Agency’s Hydrogen Implementing Agreement activities and a number of hydrogen roadmapping initiatives backed by the UK government and European Union.
Our clients range from owners of domestic-scale systems up to international utility companies.
