The cap of the mushroom is fleshy and can range in size from 2.5 to 10 cm across. The tender stem of the button mushroom is 1.9 to 5 cm long. Button Mushrooms have a mild, woodsy flavor that intensifies with cooking.

Button Mushrooms with small caps are sometimes referred to as "button" mushrooms, while mushrooms with large caps are "jumbo". They are sold fresh, canned and dried, and are available year-round.
